  • 30 minutes for hiring process review

    • Question of waiting until later in the season to talk about this, or now since its fresh in our memories
    • Decided to do it now
    • What do we want from a hiring process/committee

      • Hire good instructors
      • not hire bad instructors
      • appropriate manner
      • Appropriate #?s for each fleet

        • Not enough for Scows & Keelboats

      • If we fix the process more will come

    • Jerry

      • Allocate set number of paid position and then go with all qualified volunteers
      • Issues with volunteers being treated the same as paid instructors

    • Paul

      • What do you want the club to be?
      • One is a job and one is not. Paid vs volen
      • Solicit volunteer applications then look for paid
      • no set minimum of paid instructors
      • Paid head/Assist & youth program

    • Eli

      • 25 full time equiv, then look at volunteers
      • 78 instructors ? ton of time, 60 hrs training weekend

        • Those who can?t make it, have to spend time with the HOI

      • Large staff ? More Administration.
      • Brought up - Jo reis had mentioned in the past about the 20 core instructors, a tingihtly knit club. Lessening the line between staff & club

    • Michelle

      • HSC ? student run org
      • attract a large group of individuals
      • w/o $ turn away a large #
      • paid instr - only paid when they teach a lesson

        • down here a lot more than that

    • Mike

      • 70s first 9 hrs volunteer, hourly paid after that
      • Can?t allow anyone who can sail to teach ? Admin nightmare
      • Proper skills to have rating does not imply ability to teach & judge other people?s ability
      • Skills to teach within a particular program
      • Skills to judge other people?s skills

    • Jerry

      • Back to point ? what diretion for committee
      • Hiring committee has a written process they follow. Difficulty with not having the most relative information and using heresay or old information
      • Review the list of questions, do they lead to good instructors or good impressions?
      • Appeal process ? Hard to make informed decisions. Should specify what information needs to be presented for future appeals, and the information should be easier to get (reason for rejections)

    • Eli

      • Give recommendations, and find statistics for how many instructors they want

    • Michelle ? Fleet instruction supervisors ? Evaluation and surveys, except a lot of the evaluations don?t happen
    • Mike ? 2 main segments, returning and new

      • No distinction between paid and volunteer, 1 day for decision
      • Returning instructors the hiring committee has past history with them and as such they are not on an equal playing field with the volunteer instructors because we don?t check references
      • Didn?t contact references because it is felt if they contact one, they have to contact all of them.
      • Again not on the same playing field, random information can be brought into the process. Less info if they haven?t been an active member or haven?t been around for a while
      • Volunteer instructors- Is it appropriate to handle them the same as paid?

        • Paid instructors ? Compensate me?even if it is a low wage
        • Volunteer ? Fundamentally different, I want to give my time and experience to the club

      • For new instructors ? Different message when you are given a no

        • Paid ? Ok you?re not hired
        • Volunteer ? It?s different. Formal/impersonal dismissal

      • All in a club
      • We can?t just take anyone who wants to volunteer to teach.

        • Might not have the skills ? Instructor development program

      • For new instructors should we do ref checks?

    • Paul ? Difference between volunteer applicant and paid applicant

      • Should give the benefit of the doubt to volunteer applicants
      • Starting point ? What do we want and how does the club fit into that

    • Tristan ? Paid/volunteer on same plain

      • Quality & Safety
      • Same initial Level & then expect paid to go above that if they should get hired

    • Kyle

      • Shouldn?t have lower standards for volunteer
      • Instead should find a reason to pay people over volunteering

    • Eli

      • Sending to ed comm. ? or setting
      • Well over 100 hrs went into instructor selection

  • Adjourned
